This ancient route through the Caucasus has been much celebrated by everyone from poets to guidebook writers. The road is remarkable for its landscapes, flora and fauna, people and history, and many travelers to Georgia will regard this as a highlight of their visit.
Stop at Jvari monastery near Mtskheta(26 km from Tbilisi). The name of this monastery is translated as the “Monastery of the Cross”. Its construction is dated back to the sixth century and stands on the rocky mountaintop at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers overlooking the town of Mtskheta, which was formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Iberia.
Proceed to Gudauri (106 km from Jvari monastery), a famous Georgian ski resort, located on the south-facing plateau of Greater Caucasus Mountain range. Stop at the panoramic view site in Gudauri for photography and enjoying landscapes.
Drive to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) town (35 km from Gudauri); Accommodation at Rooms hotel.
Free evening for leisure; Overnight.

Recommended: Visit to Gergeti Trinity Church(14th century), which is situated on the right bank of the river Chkheri, at an elevation of 2170 meters (7120 feet), under mount Kazbegi. Its isolated location on top of a steep mountain surrounded by the vastness of nature has made it a symbol for Georgia. The church is a popular way-point for trekkers in the area and can be reached by a steep 3 hour climb up the mountain, or around 30 minutes by jeep up a rough mountain trail (local 4×4 vehicles available for 10-15 $ per person for round trip).
Overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast and checkout from the hotel. Drive to Ananuri fortified monastery (89 km from Stepantsminda). Ananuri is a castle complex set on the Aragvi river. The fortifications consist of two castles joined by a crenelated curtain wall.
The upper fortification with a large square tower, known as Sheupovari, is well preserved and is the location of the last defense of the Aragvi against the Shamshe. The lower fortification, with a round tower, is mostly in ruins.
Proceed to Mtskheta (45 km from Uplistsikhe). Visit to Svetitskhoveli cathedral(4th century) located in the historic town of Mtskheta. A masterpiece of the Early Middle Ages, Svetitskhoveli is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is currently the second largest church building in Georgia, after the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi.
